The Whaling Museum had been transformed for Gemma Snow's second performance of the Christmas Stroll. The large space had been filled by rows of elegant chairs and a grand piano, and several Christmas trees glittering in the corners under the soft lighting. The air was thick with anticipation as the audience filed in, their excited whispers echoing off the high ceilings.

Lin, Viv, Jeff, and John found seats near the front, pleased with the museum's metamorphosis.

“It's like stepping into another world,” Viv whispered, her eyes wide as she took in the scene. “Everything looks beautiful.”

Jeff nodded in agreement. “They've done an amazing job with the space. It feels magical.”

John chuckled, leaning in conspiratorially. “Just wait until we have to navigate our way out later. I bet at least one person trips over a hidden harpoon.”

Lin laughed, enjoying the moment of levity. “My money's on you, John. You've always had a talent for finding the one obstacle in an otherwise clear path.”

As they settled into their seats, Lin watched the eclectic mix of people around them. There were the usual Nantucket residents, of course, but also a good number of tourists who had come to Nantucket for the Stroll, their faces lit with the excitement of experiencing something uniquely island.

“Look.” Viv nudged Lin, pointing discretely to their left. “Isn't that the couple who own that new home goods shop on Main Street?”

Lin followed her cousin’s gaze, spotting a pair of fashionably dressed newcomers to the island. “Oh, yes, I think you're right. I heard they moved here from Miami. Quite a change of pace.”

“I'll say,” Jeff chimed in. “I overheard them in the hardware store last week, trying to figure out what kind of shovel they needed for snow. They seemed a bit overwhelmed.”

The group shared a quiet laugh, knowing that early days on the island held a learning curve that came with Nantucket living.

Lin’s expression darkened. “Look over there. That’s Dennis Sparks, the man who’s been attending almost all of Gemma’s performances lately. What does he hope to gain from showing up every time she performs?”

“Robert told you Dennis thinks Gemma had something to do with his dismissal from the orchestra,” Viv reminded her cousin. “He must hold a grudge and thinks his appearances will rattle her.”

“It’s just so odd.” Lin shook her head. “We’d better keep an eye on him.”

As the lights dimmed and a hush fell over the crowd, Gemma Snow stepped onto the makeshift stage. She was a vision in a flowing emerald gown that seemed to shimmer under the spotlights. Her dark hair was elegantly swept up, revealing the graceful curve of her neck as she positioned her violin.

For a moment, Gemma stood perfectly still, her eyes closed as if gathering her thoughts. Then, with a deep breath, she began to play.

The first notes filled the air, clear and pure, and Lin felt a shiver run down her spine. Gemma's talent was undeniable. Her bow danced across the strings, coaxing out melodies that seemed to speak directly to the soul.
